Saudi Arabia's religious courts have sentenced a 75 year old grandmother to 40 lashes and 4 months imprisonment for being in her own home with two, unrelated men - one of whom was delivering bread for her to eat. Yikes! How Middle-Ages is that? Read the story. This is the country that lashes raped women for "mingling," then slaps the hands of their rapists. A country where tens of young girls fleeing a fire in a school were herded back inside to die in the flames because their dress was deemed inappropriate for public display. A country where women still can't legally drive a car. OMG.This harsh, evil and misogynistic approach to Islam is called Wahabiism. Or sometimes the Salafi School. It is the root of all evil in the Middle East, and actively seeks to prevent Islam from moderating for modern times. It's Imams have issued Fatwas against Valentines Day, Disneyland, singing, dancing and all things western. Uh-huh. Sure, we're buying that. Thing is, Wahabiism is also responsible for Al Qaida, Osama bin Laden, and most of the Jihadist Madrasas and training camps around the world. Militant Sunni's, Wahabiists are also responsible for much of the violence against practicioners of Shia Islam, the Shiites.
When The Kingdom was founded, as the story is told, King Abd Al Aziz Al Saud made a deal with the Wahabi Imams. After defeating the rival Rashidi clan, Saud would control the oil and the government through the royal family, and the Wahabi clergy would have authority over the holy sites and the nation's morals. The deal holds to this day.
One has to ask in this context just why the United States, which was the victim of the 9/11 attacks directed by bin Laden, would continue to offer the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia such unmitigated and enthusiastic support in all things. Foreign aid, military hardware, protection (remember Kuwait?) and political cover included in Uncle Sams package of eternal goodies. Ah, but then there's the oil. That explains a lot, don't you think? Disgusting.
