The author is impressed with the analysis and scholarly research of Professor Juan Cole and his fine blog: Informed Consent. Cole is Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan.  So naturally we turn to him for his authoritative opinion on matters of foreign affairs and international relations.

The situation in Syria is deteriorating rapidly, as the conflict takes on a regional and sectarian dimension that many Westerners simply do not understand. An earlier, April post to this blog begins to tell that story. Cole wraps it up very nicely in this blog post.
